Round Pearls

Pearls are rarely perfectly shaped spheres. If they are, more than likely they are imitation or simulated.



Off-Round Pearls

Off-round pearls actually appear round to the eye, but will be slightly oval or flattened in shape. They will still have the same high qualities such as color or lustre; however, due to their off-round shape, will not appraise as high as a pearl determined to be round. A strand of off-round pearls is usually of considerable value for the investment.



Oval Pearls

Oval pearls are also referred to as rice pearls. or potato pearls. Rice pearls are very small averaging 3mm each. Potato pearls are usually larger and may be shaped with more of a curved middle.



Button Pearls

Button pearls are small and are produced in multiples by the same mollusk.



Drop Pearls

Drop pearls are tear drop or pear shaped and are valued for their use in earrings and pendants.



Baroque Pearls

Baroque pearls are irregular and non-symmetrical in shape. They can be considered abstract and are very often used in contemporary torsades and strands.
